A live camera on Kiyomizu-zaka, the shop-lined slope leading up to Kiyomizu-dera temple, run to help visitors avoid the crowds in Kyoto.
Kiyomizu-zaka is the steep street that climbs through the old Higashiyama district to Kiyomizu-dera, the temple famous for its wooden stage built out over a hillside. The slope is lined with shops selling pottery, sweets, pickles and souvenirs, and it is one of the busiest streets in Kyoto.
This camera is part of a network set up by Kyoto's tourism authorities so that visitors can check how crowded the sights are before going. Early morning and early evening are the quietest times; spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves bring the biggest crowds.
Live streams sometimes pause for maintenance or bad weather. We check every camera twice a day.
