Philadelphia is where the United States was born: the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed here. Today it is a lively city of historic streets, murals, museums and a famous food scene.
Historic Philadelphia
Independence National Historical Park includes Independence Hall, where the founding documents were signed, and the cracked Liberty Bell. Elfreth's Alley, one of the oldest continuously inhabited streets in America, is lined with colonial houses. The Betsy Ross House and Christ Church are nearby.
Museums and neighborhoods
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is famous for the 'Rocky Steps' from the film, which visitors love to run up. Rittenhouse Square is an elegant park surrounded by cafés. The city has more outdoor murals than almost any other in the world, and South Philly's Italian Market is one of the oldest outdoor markets in the country.
Visiting tips
Center City is compact and walkable. Philadelphia is about 90 minutes from New York and two hours from Washington, D.C. by train.
