Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and one of the biggest banking centers in the United States. Its compact Uptown is a cluster of shining towers and museums, surrounded by tree-filled neighborhoods of old houses. It is also the heart of American stock car racing.
Uptown Charlotte
Uptown is built around the crossroads of Trade and Tryon streets, known as the Square, with a statue at each corner. Nearby are the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Mint Museum Uptown and the Levine Center for the Arts, as well as Romare Bearden Park, with its skyline views.
South End and the neighborhoods
South End, just south of Uptown, is a former mill and rail district that is now the city's liveliest area, with breweries, cafés and murals along the LYNX Blue Line light rail. The neighborhoods of Dilworth and Myers Park have grand old homes under huge oak trees, and NoDa, the arts district, is known for its galleries and live music.
A classic walk along the Rail Trail
Start at the Square in Uptown and walk south along Tryon Street past the museums to Romare Bearden Park. From here, pick up the Charlotte Rail Trail, a walking and cycling path that runs alongside the light rail line through South End.
Follow the trail past public art, breweries and restaurants in converted warehouses, including Atherton Mill, a former textile mill turned market. The walk is about 4 kilometers, and the light rail can bring you back.
Visiting tips
Spring and autumn are the best times, with mild weather. Freedom Park is a lovely green space for a stroll, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center offers rafting just outside the city. The Blue Ridge Mountains are about two hours west.
