Sedona, in northern Arizona, is surrounded by towering red sandstone formations that glow orange and crimson at sunrise and sunset. It is a small town of art galleries, hiking trails and spiritual retreats, and one of the most scenic places in the American Southwest.
The red rocks
Formations such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte rise around the town, and hundreds of trails lead into the canyons. The Red Rock Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful drives in Arizona. Many visitors come for the 'vortexes', places believed by some to have special spiritual energy.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross, a modern church built into the red cliffs in 1956, offers stunning views.
Town and canyons
Uptown Sedona has shops and galleries, and Tlaquepaque is a Mexican-style village of arts and crafts. Slide Rock State Park, in Oak Creek Canyon, has natural rock water slides that are popular in summer.
Visiting tips
Sedona is about two hours north of Phoenix and a good stop on the way to the Grand Canyon. Start hikes early to avoid the midday heat, and bring plenty of water. The night sky is exceptionally dark, perfect for stargazing.
