Portland, Oregon, is a green, creative city on the Willamette River with Mount Hood on the horizon. It is known for its gardens, bridges, food carts, coffee and craft beer, and an independent spirit summed up by its unofficial motto, 'Keep Portland Weird'.
Downtown and the Pearl
Pioneer Courthouse Square, called the city's living room, is the heart of downtown. Powell's City of Books, one of the largest independent bookstores in the world, fills a whole block. The Pearl District has converted warehouses, galleries and restaurants.
Tom McCall Waterfront Park runs along the river, and the city's many bridges have earned it the nickname 'Bridgetown'.
Gardens and nature
Washington Park includes the International Rose Test Garden, with views of Mount Hood, and the peaceful Portland Japanese Garden. Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the country. The Columbia River Gorge, with Multnomah Falls, is a short drive away.
Visiting tips
Portland is rainy from October to May, but summers are dry and pleasant. Oregon has no sales tax. Neighborhoods like Hawthorne, Alberta and Mississippi have quirky shops and food.
