Juneau, the capital of Alaska, can't be reached by road. It sits between steep forested mountains and the waters of the Inside Passage, and is surrounded by glaciers, wildlife and wilderness. It is one of the most popular stops for Alaska cruises.
Glaciers and wildlife
The Mendenhall Glacier, just outside town, ends in a lake with icebergs, and a trail leads to the thundering Nugget Falls. Whale watching tours often see humpback whales, and bald eagles are a common sight.
The Mount Roberts Tramway climbs from the waterfront to alpine trails with views over the channel.
Downtown
The small downtown, near the cruise docks, has historic buildings from the gold rush era, shops and the Alaska State Museum. South Franklin Street is the main street.
Visiting tips
Juneau is reached by plane or boat. It is one of the rainiest cities in the US, so bring a rain jacket. The summer season, from May to September, has long days and the most tours.
