Savannah, Georgia's oldest city, is one of the most beautiful towns in the American South. Its Historic District is laid out around 22 leafy squares shaded by live oaks draped with Spanish moss, surrounded by grand antebellum houses and churches.
The squares and Forsyth Park
Founded in 1733, Savannah was planned as a grid of squares, each with its own monuments and character. Chippewa Square appeared in the film Forrest Gump. Forsyth Park, at the southern edge of the district, is famous for its white fountain.
The Cathedral of St John the Baptist and historic homes like the Mercer-Williams House can be visited.
River Street
River Street runs along the Savannah River, lined with old cotton warehouses turned into shops, bars and restaurants. City Market is a lively area of galleries and live music. Savannah is known for its ghost tours, and it allows drinks in to-go cups in the historic district.
Visiting tips
Spring, when the azaleas bloom, is the most beautiful season. Summers are hot and humid. Tybee Island, Savannah's beach, is 30 minutes away. Bonaventure Cemetery is atmospheric and historic.
