Denver, Colorado's capital, sits exactly one mile above sea level on the high plains, with the Rocky Mountains on its western horizon. It is a sunny, outdoorsy city of craft breweries, sports, art and easy access to some of America's best mountain scenery.
Downtown and LoDo
Union Station, a restored 1914 railway station, is a lively hub of restaurants and bars. LoDo, Lower Downtown, has Victorian warehouses and is home to Coors Field, the baseball stadium. The 16th Street Mall is a long pedestrian street through downtown.
The Colorado State Capitol has a step marked exactly one mile high. The Denver Art Museum, with its angular building, is in the Golden Triangle cultural district.
Red Rocks and the mountains
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, set between giant red sandstone formations west of the city, is one of the world's most famous concert venues. The Rocky Mountains, with hiking, skiing and scenic drives, are within an hour or two.
Visiting tips
The altitude can affect visitors at first, so drink plenty of water. Denver has around 300 days of sunshine a year. Neighborhoods like RiNo, the River North Art District, are full of murals and breweries.
