Salt Lake City, Utah's capital, lies in a valley beneath the snowy Wasatch Mountains, near the vast Great Salt Lake. Founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847, it is a clean, wide-streeted city and a gateway to world-class skiing and Utah's national parks.
Downtown
Temple Square, the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has the granite Salt Lake Temple, the Tabernacle with its famous choir and peaceful gardens. The Utah State Capitol, on a hill above downtown, offers views across the valley.
City Creek Center is an open-air shopping area with a creek running through it.
Mountains and lake
Ski resorts such as Alta, Snowbird and Park City are less than an hour away, and the 2002 Winter Olympics were held here. The Great Salt Lake, saltier than the ocean, is best seen at Antelope Island State Park, home to bison. Arches, Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks are within a day's drive.
Visiting tips
The city's grid system makes addresses easy to find. Winters bring excellent powder snow, while summer is hot and dry, perfect for hiking in the canyons.
