Orlando, in central Florida, is the theme park capital of the world and one of the most visited cities in the United States. Beyond Walt Disney World and Universal, it has a walkable downtown around Lake Eola, the leafy streets of Winter Park and hundreds of lakes, springs and palm-lined boulevards.
The theme park city
Walt Disney World, southwest of the city, opened in 1971 and grew into a resort of four theme parks, two water parks and dozens of hotels. Universal Orlando, with its own parks and the Epic Universe park that opened in 2025, lies closer to downtown. Between them runs International Drive, an 11-mile strip of hotels, attractions and restaurants, crowned by the giant observation wheel at ICON Park.
You do not need a park ticket to get a taste of it all. Disney Springs, a waterfront district of shops, restaurants and live music, and Universal CityWalk, the entertainment street at the entrance to the Universal parks, are both free to enter and lively well into the night.
Downtown and Lake Eola
Downtown Orlando is a compact grid of office towers, bars and restaurants around Orange Avenue and Church Street. Its heart is Lake Eola Park, where a path circles the lake past the lit fountain, swan boats and a Sunday farmers' market. Thornton Park, just east, has brick streets and small cafés, and the Mills 50 district to the north is known for its Vietnamese and Asian food.
Winter Park and beyond
Winter Park, a separate town on Orlando's northern edge, has a tree-shaded main street, Park Avenue, and a boat tour that glides through chain lakes and narrow canals past grand lakeside homes. Natural springs such as Wekiwa Springs, with clear water at a steady 72°F (22°C), are a short drive from the city, and Kennedy Space Center on the Atlantic coast is about an hour away.
Visiting tips
Orlando is spread out and built for cars, so plan to drive or use ride-hailing between areas. Summers are hot and humid, with short thunderstorms most afternoons, while winter and spring bring mild, sunny days and the biggest crowds in the parks. Walk downtown and Lake Eola in the evening when it is cooler.
