Quebec City, founded in 1608, is one of the oldest cities in North America and the only one north of Mexico with its city walls still standing. Its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, feels like a corner of France above the St Lawrence River.
Old Quebec
The Château Frontenac, a grand hotel with copper roofs, dominates the skyline above Dufferin Terrace, a boardwalk with river views. Below, the Petit-Champlain quarter is a charming area of narrow streets and boutiques reached by a funicular or the 'Breakneck Stairs'.
The Citadel, still an active military base, and the walls that surround the upper town can be visited on foot.
Visiting tips
The Winter Carnival in February is one of the largest in the world. In summer, the city hosts a major music festival. Montmorency Falls, higher than Niagara, is a short drive away.
