Niagara Falls, on the border between Ontario and New York, is one of the most famous natural wonders in North America. The Canadian side offers the best views of the curving Horseshoe Falls.
The falls
The Niagara Parkway promenade runs along the edge of the gorge. Boats sail into the mist at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, and Journey Behind the Falls leads through tunnels behind the water. At night the falls are lit in colors, with fireworks in summer.
Clifton Hill and beyond
Clifton Hill is a busy street of attractions, arcades and a giant Ferris wheel. The wine town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, with its historic streets and ice wine, is a short drive north.
Seeing the falls
Walk along the Niagara Parkway on the Canadian side for the best view of both the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Then take the boat to the base of the falls; you will get soaked, but it is unforgettable.
The Journey Behind the Falls takes you through tunnels to platforms beside the falling water. In the evening, the falls are lit in colors, and in summer there are fireworks above the gorge.
Good to know
Niagara Falls is about 90 minutes from Toronto by car, train or bus. Clifton Hill is crowded and touristy, so if you prefer quiet, head to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a pretty village surrounded by wineries 20 minutes away.
The falls are impressive year-round. In winter the mist freezes on the trees, creating an icy landscape.
