Charlottetown is the small, friendly capital of Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province. In 1864 it hosted the conference that led to the creation of Canada, earning it the title Birthplace of Confederation. Today it is a walkable harbor town of tree-lined streets, historic churches and a famous seafood scene.
Historic downtown
Province House, where the 1864 conference took place, is the heart of the old town, next to the Confederation Centre of the Arts, home of the long-running Anne of Green Gables musical. St. Dunstan's Basilica, with its twin spires, is one of the finest churches in Canada.
Victoria Row, a pedestrian street of red-brick buildings, is lined with restaurants and summer terraces.
The waterfront
Peake's Quay and Confederation Landing, on the harbor, have a marina, boardwalks and shops. A path continues along the water to Victoria Park, a large green space at the tip of the town with views across the harbor and a historic battery of cannons.
A classic downtown walk
Start at Province House and the Confederation Centre, then stroll along Victoria Row and Great George Street, lined with heritage buildings, to St. Dunstan's Basilica. Continue down to Confederation Landing and Peake's Quay on the waterfront.
Follow the boardwalk west along the harbor to Victoria Park and the elegant Government House. The walk is about 4 kilometers.
Visiting tips
Summer is the season, with festivals, theater and long days on the beach. Prince Edward Island National Park, with red sandstone cliffs and dunes, is about 30 minutes away, and Green Gables Heritage Place, the setting of Anne of Green Gables, is nearby in Cavendish. The Confederation Bridge links the island to New Brunswick.
