Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, is a lively port on one of the world's largest natural harbors. Its waterfront boardwalk, historic Citadel and friendly pubs make it the heart of Atlantic Canada.

The waterfront

The Halifax Waterfront boardwalk is one of the longest in the world, lined with shops, food stands and ships. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has exhibits on the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion of 1917. Pier 21 tells the story of immigrants arriving in Canada.

Citadel and coast

The star-shaped Halifax Citadel overlooks downtown and fires a cannon at noon. Peggy's Cove, with its lighthouse on granite rocks, is a famous day trip.

A day in Halifax

Walk the waterfront boardwalk, one of the longest in the world, past wooden wharves, ships and seafood shacks. Stop at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which has artifacts from the Titanic and the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

Climb to the Citadel for a view over the harbor, then visit the Public Gardens. In the afternoon, drive to Peggy's Cove, a fishing village with a lighthouse on granite rocks, about 45 minutes away.

Good to know

Halifax is famous for lobster rolls and fresh seafood. The Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is one of the oldest in North America.

Summer and early autumn are best, with mild weather and colorful leaves in October. Fog can roll in quickly, so bring layers.
