Banff is a small mountain town inside Banff National Park, Canada's first national park, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta. Surrounded by snowy peaks, glacier-fed turquoise lakes and forests full of wildlife, it is one of the most beautiful places in North America.
The town
Banff Avenue, the main street, has a perfect view of Cascade Mountain. The Banff Gondola climbs Sulphur Mountain to a boardwalk along the ridge, and the Banff Upper Hot Springs let you soak in warm water with mountain views. The Fairmont Banff Springs hotel looks like a Scottish castle.
Lakes and drives
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, about 45 minutes away, are famous for their unreal turquoise color. The Icefields Parkway, heading north to Jasper, is one of the most spectacular drives in the world, past glaciers and waterfalls. Watch for elk, bighorn sheep and bears.
