Mont-Tremblant is a resort town in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, about 90 minutes north of Montreal. Its pedestrian village of brightly painted houses climbs the foot of the highest peak in the region, and it is one of the most popular ski resorts in eastern North America, as well as a beautiful place to see autumn colors.
The pedestrian village
The resort village is built in the style of an old Quebec town, with colorful facades, steep roofs and cobbled lanes. Shops, restaurants and terraces fill its squares, and a free open-air gondola, the Cabriolet, links the upper and lower village. Place Saint-Bernard, at the base of the slopes, is the center of activity.
The mountain and the lakes
A panoramic gondola climbs to the summit of Mont Tremblant for views over the Laurentians and Lac-Tremblant. In summer, there are hiking trails, a luge track and lake beaches. Mont-Tremblant National Park, nearby, is Quebec's oldest provincial park, with lakes, rivers, waterfalls and canoe routes.
A classic walk through the village
Start at the lower village near Lac Miroir and walk up the main pedestrian lane through the village, past the shops and the Saint-Bernard chapel. Continue to Place Saint-Bernard at the bottom of the gondola.
Ride the gondola to the summit for the view, then take the easy path back down or ride down again. The old town center of Mont-Tremblant, with local shops and bistros, is a short drive or bike ride away along the P'tit Train du Nord trail.
Visiting tips
Ski season runs from late November to April. Late September and early October bring brilliant autumn foliage. French is the main language, but English is widely spoken at the resort.
