Whistler is North America's largest ski resort, two hours north of Vancouver in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. Its car-free village is a charming maze of plazas and lanes, busy with skiers in winter and with hikers, mountain bikers and lake-goers in summer. It co-hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Whistler Village

The Village Stroll is a pedestrian path that winds through Whistler Village, lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and patios, with views up to the mountains. Whistler Olympic Plaza, with its giant Olympic rings, hosts concerts and an ice rink in winter. Nearby, the Audain Art Museum shows art from British Columbia, including First Nations works.

Two mountains and the Peak 2 Peak

Whistler and Blackcomb mountains rise straight from the village. In summer, gondolas carry visitors up for hiking and views, and the Peak 2 Peak Gondola links the two summits on one of the longest free spans of any lift in the world. In the valley, Lost Lake and Alta Lake are perfect for swimming, paddling and walking.

A classic walk around the village

Start at Whistler Olympic Plaza and follow the Village Stroll south through Village Square and Mountain Square, at the base of the Whistler gondola. Continue to the Upper Village at the foot of Blackcomb, passing the big hotels.

From the Upper Village, the Valley Trail leads through the forest to Lost Lake Park, with a beach and boardwalks, about 2 kilometers away. Walk around the lake and return to the village. The loop is about 6 kilometers.

Visiting tips

The ski season runs from late November to April, and summer is just as popular. The drive from Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway is one of Canada's most scenic, passing Howe Sound and Shannon Falls. Squamish, halfway along, has the Sea to Sky Gondola.
