Calgary, in Alberta, is a modern city of skyscrapers on the prairies with the Rocky Mountains on the horizon. It is famous for the Calgary Stampede, one of the world's biggest rodeos, and as the gateway to Banff.
Downtown
Stephen Avenue Walk is a pedestrian street of restaurants and historic sandstone buildings. The Calgary Tower offers views of the mountains, and the Plus 15 network of skywalks links downtown buildings. The Central Library is a striking modern building.
Rivers and the Stampede
The Bow River pathway is great for walking and cycling, with the Peace Bridge and Prince's Island Park. Every July, the Stampede brings rodeos, chuckwagon races and cowboy culture to the city.
A day in Calgary
Start on Stephen Avenue, a pedestrian street with historic sandstone buildings, then walk up to the Calgary Tower for a view of the Rockies on the horizon. Follow the Bow River pathway to the Peace Bridge and the Kensington neighborhood, full of cafés.
Spend the afternoon at the Glenbow or Studio Bell music museum, or visit the East Village. In the evening, try Alberta beef in one of the city's steakhouses.
Good to know
Calgary is the gateway to Banff, about 90 minutes away. In July, the Calgary Stampede brings rodeos, concerts and cowboy hats everywhere.
Winters are cold but often sunny, thanks to warm chinook winds that can raise the temperature suddenly. The C-Train light rail is free downtown.
