Szeged, in southern Hungary, is known as the 'City of Sunshine'. Rebuilt after a great flood in 1879, it has grand squares, Art Nouveau buildings and a lively university atmosphere.

The city

The twin-towered Votive Church dominates Dóm Square, where an open-air festival is held in summer. The Reök Palace is a stunning Art Nouveau building, and the New Synagogue is one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Food

Szeged is famous for paprika and for halászlé, a spicy fisherman's soup made with fish from the Tisza River.

A day in Szeged

Start at Dóm Square, dominated by the twin-towered Votive Church, and look at the arcades decorated with statues of famous Hungarians. Then walk to the New Synagogue, one of the most beautiful in Europe, with a stunning dome decorated with stars and flowers.

Walk along Kárász Street to the Reök Palace, a colorful Art Nouveau building, and finish on the Tisza riverbank for a bowl of fish soup.

Good to know

Szeged is one of Hungary's sunniest cities and a big university town. In summer, the Szeged Open-Air Festival stages opera and musicals in front of the Votive Church.
