Eger, in northern Hungary, is a charming baroque town famous for its castle, which resisted an Ottoman siege in 1552, and for its red wine, Bull's Blood.

The town

Eger Castle overlooks the town, and its museum tells the story of the famous siege. A slender Ottoman minaret, the northernmost in Europe, can be climbed. Dobó Square is the town's lively center.

Wine

The Valley of Beautiful Women is a small valley full of wine cellars dug into the hillside, where you can taste Egri Bikavér, Bull's Blood. Thermal baths are also nearby.
