Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, is the country's second-largest city and a historic center of Protestant culture, often called the 'Calvinist Rome'. It is the gateway to the Hortobágy National Park.
The center
The Great Reformed Church, a large yellow neoclassical church, dominates the main square. The Déri Museum has paintings by Mihály Munkácsy, and the Nagyerdő forest park has thermal baths and a lake.
Around Debrecen
The Hortobágy, Hungary's great plain, is a UNESCO site with herdsmen, grey cattle and a famous nine-arched bridge. The Flower Carnival in August is the city's biggest event.
