Siófok, on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, is Hungary's most popular summer resort, known as the 'capital of Balaton'.

The lake

Shallow, warm water and long grassy beaches make Siófok ideal for families. The Golden Shore and Silver Shore stretch along the lake, and boats cross to Balatonfüred and Tihany.

The town

The water tower in the center has a viewing platform. In summer, Petőfi Promenade is full of bars and clubs.

A summer day in Siófok

Siófok wakes up slowly in summer. Mornings are for the beach, with grassy lawns that slope gently into the warm, shallow lake water, ideal for children. The Golden Shore, east of the center, is lively, while the Silver Shore, to the west, is quieter. In the afternoon, take a boat from the harbor across the lake to Tihany or Balatonfüred, a trip of about an hour.

In the evening, the promenade along the lake fills with families and young people. The water tower in the town center has a viewing platform and a café at the top, and the Kálmán Imre promenade has street musicians and stalls.

Good to know

Lake Balaton is about 80 kilometers long and is often called the 'Hungarian Sea'. Siófok is about 90 minutes from Budapest by car or train. The season runs from June to August; many places close in winter, though the town is pleasant for a quiet walk.

The Balaton Sound festival and other summer events attract big crowds. The lake is shallow, so the water warms quickly, but storms can arrive suddenly; warning lights around the lake flash when wind is coming.
