Sopron, right on the Austrian border, has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Hungary. It is called the 'most loyal town' after it voted to stay in Hungary in 1921.

The old town

The Firewatch Tower, the symbol of Sopron, offers views over the rooftops. Fő tér, the main square, has the Trinity Column and gothic Goat Church. Roman ruins lie beneath the streets.

Wine

Sopron is known for its Kékfrankos red wine, served in cellars around the town. Lake Fertő, a UNESCO site, is nearby.

A day in Sopron

Start at the Firewatch Tower, climbing to the balcony for a view over the red roofs of the old town and the hills beyond. Walk through the Gate of Loyalty, commemorating the town's 1921 vote to stay in Hungary, to Fő tér and the Trinity Column. The medieval synagogues and the Storno House are worth a visit.

In the afternoon, explore the Lővérek hills, a forested area on the edge of town with walking paths and lookout towers. In the evening, visit a wine cellar for a glass of Kékfrankos.

Good to know

Sopron is just 60 kilometers from Vienna, and many Austrians come here for dentists, shopping and dining. Lake Fertő, shared with Austria, is good for cycling around its reedbeds.

The Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, called the Hungarian Versailles, is nearby, where Joseph Haydn worked.
