Győr, halfway between Budapest and Vienna, is a charming baroque city at the meeting of three rivers. Its old town is full of corner balconies, squares and churches.

The old town

Széchenyi Square is the heart of the old town, surrounded by baroque buildings. The Cathedral on Chapter Hill holds a precious medieval reliquary. Look out for the ornate corner balconies on many houses.

Around Győr

Pannonhalma Archabbey, a UNESCO-listed Benedictine monastery founded in 996, sits on a hilltop nearby.

Good to know

Győr lies on the main railway line between Budapest and Vienna, which makes it an easy stop for a few hours or a night. Its old town is compact, with pedestrian streets, cafés and a lively atmosphere thanks to its university and theater.

The Rába Quelle thermal bath is a relaxing stop, and the riverside paths are good for walks.

A walk through the old town

Start at Széchenyi Square, with its baroque Benedictine church and the column of the Virgin Mary. Walk up to Chapter Hill, where the cathedral holds the gold herm of King Ladislaus, a precious reliquary bust. The Bishop's Castle has a tower with a fine view of the rivers.

Look for the corner balconies decorating the old houses, and the Ark of the Covenant monument. The riverside by the Rába is a pleasant place to stroll in the evening.
