Explore Cairo: Downtown Walking Tour

An hour in downtown Cairo, where the grand early-20th-century buildings meet the city's busiest markets. The walk starts in the Al Sharifain passage, follows Qasr al-Nil and Mustafa Kamil streets past the old Davies Bryan and Adly buildings to Opera Square.

From there it plunges into the crowds of Ataba: the electronics and furniture markets, Abd el-Aziz Street, the market under the Al-Azhar bridge and the open-air stalls of El-Gaish. A noisy, busy, very real slice of daily life.
