Good to know
Port Said was built in the 1850s when the canal was dug. It is about three hours from Cairo.
The city has a duty-free zone and many shops.
A city of the canal
Port Said grew up with the Suez Canal, and its history is written on its buildings: wooden verandas and balconies built by French, Italian and Greek merchants in the late 19th century. The Suez Canal Authority building, with its green domes, is one of the city's landmarks. Standing on the promenade as container ships slide past, close enough to see the crew, is an unusual and memorable experience. The city's fish market and seafood restaurants are another reason to stop.
