Cairo, the largest city in the Arab world, sits on the Nile near the Pyramids of Giza. Its historic Islamic quarter, called the 'city of a thousand minarets', is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The pyramids
The Great Pyramid of Giza, built more than 4,500 years ago, is the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. The Sphinx guards the plateau. The Grand Egyptian Museum nearby displays the treasures of Tutankhamun.
Islamic and Coptic Cairo
Khan el-Khalili is a huge bazaar of lanterns, spices and crafts. Al-Muizz Street is lined with medieval mosques and madrasas. The Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali overlook the city, and Coptic Cairo has ancient churches.
