Sharm El Sheikh, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is one of the world's great diving destinations. Coral reefs line its coast, and desert mountains rise behind its resorts.

Reefs

Ras Mohammed National Park, at the meeting of two gulfs, has dramatic coral walls and huge schools of fish. The Straits of Tiran and many house reefs are perfect for snorkeling.

Town

Naama Bay is the lively center, with a promenade of restaurants and bars. SOHO Square and the Old Market have shops and the large Al Sahaba Mosque. Trips go to Mount Sinai and St Catherine's Monastery.

A day in Sharm

Ras Mohammed National Park, at the tip of the Sinai, has some of the best reefs in the world. Snorkel or dive along the coral walls.

In the evening, Naama Bay and the Old Market are lively places to walk.

Good to know

Day trips go to St Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai, climbed at night for sunrise.

Protect the reefs: do not touch the coral and use reef-safe sunscreen.

Beyond the beach

Sharm el-Sheikh is a resort city spread along a series of bays, each with its own character. Naama Bay is the lively center, with a pedestrian promenade, while Shark's Bay and Nabq are quieter. Glass-bottom boats show the reefs to non-swimmers. The town's Old Market, with its mosque and spice shops, gives a glimpse of local life. Desert excursions to Bedouin camps for dinner under the stars are popular, especially on clear winter nights.
