About this video
Four and a half hours in medieval Islamic Cairo, by day and by night. The day walk starts in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, visits an old hammam and an Ottoman sabil-kuttab (fountain and school), the Al-Hakim Mosque and the monuments of Al-Mu'izz Street, the real Midaq Alley of Naguib Mahfouz's novel, and the Al-Azhar and Abu Dahab mosques.
After dark it returns to the bazaar and the floodlit Qalawun complex, where whirling tanoura dancers and musicians perform, then walks out to the old southern gate and back through the spice market, the lamp sellers of Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muski Street.
