Vieques, an island off Puerto Rico's east coast, has wild horses roaming free, empty beaches and Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world.

The bay

In Mosquito Bay, microorganisms glow blue-green when the water moves. Kayak tours at night are an unforgettable experience.

The island

Much of the island was a US Navy range and is now a wildlife refuge with beaches like Sun Bay, Caracas and Playa Negra. Esperanza has a relaxed waterfront Malecón.

Good to know

Vieques is reached by a short flight or a ferry from Ceiba, on the main island. Most visitors rent a jeep or a golf cart, as public transport is limited, and the wild horses often wander the roads. The bioluminescent bay is best on moonless nights; swimming is not allowed, but kayaking or electric boat tours let you see the glow. Beaches in the former Navy land, now a wildlife refuge, are among the emptiest in the Caribbean.
