Arecibo, on Puerto Rico's north coast, sits at the edge of the karst country, a landscape of limestone hills, sinkholes and caves.

The coast

Cueva del Indio is a sea cave with Taíno petroglyphs and a natural rock arch. The Arecibo Lighthouse stands on a cliff above the Atlantic.

Karst country

Inland, the Río Camuy Cave Park has huge caverns and an underground river. The site of the famous Arecibo Observatory is in the hills.

Good to know

Arecibo is about an hour west of San Juan. The famous radio telescope collapsed in 2020, but the site has reopened as a science and education center. Cueva Ventana, a cave with a 'window' opening onto a green valley, is a popular short hike nearby. The Río Camuy Cave Park, one of the largest cave systems in the world, is a short drive inland. The coastal road east of Arecibo has wild beaches and lookout points.
