Svendborg, on the south coast of Funen, is a charming harbor town and the gateway to the South Funen Archipelago, a sailors' paradise of small islands.

The town

The harbor is full of old wooden sailing ships. Steep lanes with colorful houses climb from the water to the town center and the market square.

Islands

Bridges lead to Tåsinge, home to Valdemar's Castle, and ferries go to Ærø and other islands of the archipelago.

Why it is worth a visit

Svendborg is a center for traditional sailing ships, and in summer, old wooden schooners take visitors out into the archipelago. The town is a good base for cycling, with quiet roads, small ferries and gentle hills across the islands of South Funen. Tåsinge's village of Troense, with thatched houses facing the water, is one of the prettiest in Denmark. The writer Bertolt Brecht lived near Svendborg in exile in the 1930s.
