Esbjerg, on the west coast of Jutland, is Denmark's North Sea port and energy capital. It is known for the giant sculpture Man Meets the Sea and the ferry to Fanø island.

The city

Man Meets the Sea, four 9-meter white figures sitting on the beach, is the city's landmark. The Fisheries and Maritime Museum tells the story of the North Sea.

Fanø

A short ferry ride leads to Fanø, an island of wide beaches, thatched houses and the old maritime village of Sønderho.

Why it is worth a visit

Esbjerg is a young city, founded in 1868 as a harbor for exports to Britain. Its center has many fine buildings from the early 20th century and a lively pedestrian street. The Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO site, stretches along the coast, and seal safaris and oyster tours take visitors onto the tidal flats. Fanø's beach at Rindby is so wide and firm that cars can drive on it.
