Skagen, at the northern tip of Denmark, is famous for its special light, yellow houses and Grenen, the sandy point where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas meet.

Light and art

In the late 19th century, the Skagen Painters were drawn by the light. Their works hang in the Skagens Museum. The town's houses are painted a distinctive 'Skagen yellow'.

Nature

At Grenen, you can stand with a foot in each sea. Råbjerg Mile is a huge migrating sand dune, and the Sand-Buried Church sticks out of the dunes.

Good to know

Skagen is about an hour north of Aalborg by train. Grenen is a 45-minute walk from the town, or you can ride the Sandormen, a tractor-drawn bus, to the tip. Råbjerg Mile moves about 15 meters east every year. In summer, Skagen is one of Denmark's most popular holiday towns, and the light, especially in the evening, still draws artists and photographers.
