Roskilde, half an hour from Copenhagen, was once Denmark's capital. Its cathedral holds the tombs of Danish kings and queens, and its museum displays real Viking ships.

The cathedral

Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the first Gothic cathedral built of brick in Scandinavia. Around 40 kings and queens are buried here.

Vikings and music

The Viking Ship Museum shows five ships sunk around 1070 to block the fjord. Every summer, Roskilde Festival is one of Europe's largest music festivals.

Good to know

Roskilde is just 25 minutes from Copenhagen by train, an easy half-day trip. The Viking Ship Museum has a boatyard where traditional Viking ships are built using old techniques, and in summer you can row a replica ship on the fjord. The cathedral holds an impressive collection of royal sarcophagi, from medieval kings to modern monarchs. In late June and early July, the Roskilde Festival draws over 100,000 people, so accommodation fills quickly.
