Ribe, founded in the early 8th century, is the oldest town in Denmark. Its crooked half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes gather around a mighty cathedral.

The old town

Ribe Cathedral, the oldest in Denmark, has a tower you can climb for views over the marshes. Every evening, a night watchman leads a walk through the streets singing old songs.

Around

Ribe Viking Centre recreates a Viking market town. The nearby Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO site, is famous for 'black sun' starling murmurations.

Good to know

Ribe lies in the marshlands of southwest Jutland, near the Wadden Sea, about 30 minutes from Esbjerg. In spring and autumn, huge flocks of starlings gather over the marshes at sunset, creating the 'Black Sun' phenomenon, one of nature's great spectacles. Ribe Viking Museum displays finds from the Viking-age market town. The night watchman's tour is free and runs most evenings in summer, starting from the main square.
