Helsingør, known in English as Elsinore, sits at the narrowest point of the Øresund, just four kilometers from Sweden. It is home to Kronborg Castle, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Kronborg Castle
Kronborg, a Renaissance castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site, controlled the sound and collected tolls from passing ships for centuries. Hamlet is performed in its courtyard in summer.
The old town
The old town has cobbled streets and colorful houses. The M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark is built underground in an old dry dock. Ferries cross to Helsingborg in Sweden in 20 minutes.
