St. Wolfgang is a picturesque village on the shore of the Wolfgangsee in the Salzkammergut lake district. Its pilgrimage church, painted houses and lake views make it one of Austria's prettiest places.

The village

The pilgrimage church holds a famous gothic altar by Michael Pacher. The lakeside lanes lead past historic inns, including the White Horse Inn made famous by an operetta.

Lake and mountain

A historic cog railway climbs the Schafberg, with views of several lakes. Boats cross the Wolfgangsee to St. Gilgen and Strobl.

Walk through the village to the pilgrimage church, with its gothic altar. Take a boat across the Wolfgangsee.

Ride the cog railway up the Schafberg for one of the best views in the Salzkammergut.

Good to know

St. Wolfgang is close to Salzburg. The Christmas market by the lake is lovely.

Strobl and St. Gilgen are pretty villages on the same lake.

The Salzkammergut

St. Wolfgang lies in the Salzkammergut, a region of lakes and mountains east of Salzburg. The village is known for the White Horse Inn, which inspired a famous operetta, and for its church, with a carved altar by Michael Pacher from the 15th century. Paths lead along the lake shore, and in summer you can swim from small wooden jetties. Coming by boat from St. Gilgen is the prettiest way to arrive.
