Kitzbühel, in Tyrol, is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world, with a colorful medieval town center. It hosts the Hahnenkamm race, one of the most spectacular events in alpine skiing.

The old town

Two main streets of painted houses, with gables and wrought-iron signs, form the car-free town center, full of boutiques and cafés.

The mountains

The Hahnenkamm cable car leads to a large ski area and, in summer, hiking trails. The Streif downhill course is one of the most feared in the world.

Why it is famous

Kitzbühel has been one of the Alps' most glamorous resorts since the early 20th century. Its medieval center, with pastel houses and painted facades, is car-free and lined with cafés and boutiques. The Streif, the downhill course of the Hahnenkamm race, is one of the most feared in skiing. The ski area is huge, and in summer the same slopes become hiking and biking trails with mountain huts serving Tyrolean dishes like Kaspressknödel, cheese dumplings in broth.
