Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, sits in a valley surrounded by high mountains. It has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, and from its medieval old town you can be on a mountaintop in about 20 minutes.

The old town

The Golden Roof, a balcony covered with 2,657 gilded copper tiles, was built for Emperor Maximilian I. Around it, the old town has colorful houses, arcades and the City Tower. The pastel houses along the Inn River, with the mountains behind, are the city's classic view.

Into the mountains

The Nordkette cable car, with stations designed by Zaha Hadid, climbs from the city to over 2,000 meters. The Bergisel ski jump, also designed by Hadid, overlooks the city. Swarovski Crystal Worlds is a short trip away.
