Linz, Austria's third-largest city, sits on the Danube between Vienna and Salzburg. Once an industrial city, it has reinvented itself as a center of media art and culture.

Old town and the Danube

The Hauptplatz, one of the largest main squares in Austria, has a baroque Trinity Column. The Danube banks are lined with the Lentos art museum, which glows at night, and the Ars Electronica Center, a museum of the future.

Pöstlingberg

One of the steepest adhesion railways in the world climbs Pöstlingberg hill to a pilgrimage church with views over the city. Linz is the home of the Linzer torte.

Why it surprises visitors

Linz is Austria's third-largest city, once known mainly for industry, but it has reinvented itself as a city of culture and technology. The Danube park between the Lentos and the Brucknerhaus concert hall is a lively place on summer evenings, and the Mural Harbor at the port has some of Europe's largest street art. The Pöstlingberg railway, one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world, climbs to a pilgrimage church with a view of the whole city.
