Salzburg, on the Salzach River, is a baroque jewel framed by mountains, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting of The Sound of Music. Its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is crowned by one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

The old town

Getreidegasse, the main shopping street, is known for its wrought-iron signs and is home to Mozart's birthplace. Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenz palace stand on grand squares nearby. Above them, the Hohensalzburg Fortress is reached by funicular and offers sweeping views of the Alps.

Gardens and festivals

Across the river, the Mirabell Gardens, with fountains and flowers, appear in The Sound of Music. The Salzburg Festival in summer is one of the most important music festivals in the world.
