Sydney is Australia's largest city, built around one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the world. The sails of the Opera House and the arch of the Harbour Bridge are world-famous icons, and the city's golden beaches, parks and ferries give it a relaxed outdoor lifestyle.
The harbor
The Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and opened in 1973, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided tours show its halls, and its forecourt and the surrounding Circular Quay are the busiest part of the waterfront. The Royal Botanic Garden curves around the harbor to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, a classic viewpoint.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge, nicknamed 'the Coathanger', can be crossed on foot, and BridgeClimb tours lead adventurous visitors to the top of the arch. Beneath it, The Rocks is the city's oldest neighborhood, with sandstone buildings, lanes and weekend markets.
Beaches and neighborhoods
Bondi Beach is Australia's most famous beach, and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk follows cliffs, rock pools and smaller beaches like Tamarama and Bronte. Manly, reached by a scenic ferry ride across the harbor, has a relaxed beach town atmosphere.
Darling Harbour and the new Barangaroo district have waterfront restaurants and parks. Neighborhoods like Surry Hills, Newtown and Paddington are full of cafés, small bars and independent shops.
Visiting tips
Ferries are part of the public transport network and are the cheapest way to see the harbor. New Year's Eve fireworks over the bridge are among the best in the world. The Blue Mountains are an easy day trip by train.
