Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is often called the most isolated big city in the world, closer to Bali than to Sydney. It is one of the sunniest cities in Australia, with the wide Swan River, one of the largest inner-city parks in the world and long white beaches on the Indian Ocean.
The city and Kings Park
Kings Park, larger than New York's Central Park, sits on a hill above the city, with bushland, botanical gardens of Western Australian wildflowers and a glass-and-steel walkway through the treetops. The view over the skyline and the Swan River is the best in Perth.
Elizabeth Quay is a waterfront precinct in the city center, with a pedestrian bridge and the Bell Tower, which houses historic bells from London. Northbridge, just north of the CBD, is home to the Perth Cultural Centre, museums and nightlife.
Fremantle, beaches and Rottnest
Fremantle, Perth's port, has well-preserved colonial buildings, a historic prison, a weekend market and a relaxed café culture. Cottesloe and Scarborough beaches are famous for their Indian Ocean sunsets.
Ferries leave from Perth and Fremantle for Rottnest Island, home to the quokka, a small, friendly marsupial famous for its 'smile'. The island has no private cars, and cycling around its bays is a highlight.
Visiting tips
Perth is hot and dry in summer and mild in winter. Wildflowers bloom across the state from August to October. Margaret River's wineries and the Pinnacles Desert are popular trips.
