Noosa, at the northern end of Queensland's Sunshine Coast, is one of Australia's favorite beach towns. Its north-facing Main Beach has gentle waves, its stylish Hastings Street is lined with boutiques and restaurants, and a national park with koalas and rocky headlands is right on its doorstep.

Hastings Street and Main Beach

Hastings Street, running parallel to Noosa Main Beach, is the heart of Noosa Heads, with shops, cafés and open-air restaurants shaded by trees. Main Beach faces north into Laguna Bay, so its waves are usually calm, making it one of the few beaches on the coast that is good for families and beginner surfers.

Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park begins at the end of Hastings Street. Its coastal track winds around the headland past Tea Tree Bay, Dolphin Point and the dramatic rocks of Hell's Gates, with views of surfers below and the chance to see koalas in the trees and dolphins and whales offshore.

A classic coastal walk

Start on Hastings Street and walk along the boardwalk at the eastern end of Main Beach into the national park. Follow the coastal track to Tea Tree Bay, Granite Bay and Hell's Gates, about 4 kilometers each way.

Return the same way, or continue to Alexandria Bay and on to Sunshine Beach. In the afternoon, stroll along the Noosa River at Noosaville, where you can hire boats and watch the sunset.

Visiting tips

Noosa is about two hours north of Brisbane and enjoys mild weather year round. Book ahead for school holidays. The Noosa Everglades, upriver, offer peaceful canoeing, and the Eumundi Markets in the hinterland run on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
