Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is Australia's second-oldest city, set on the estuary of the Derwent River beneath kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Its sandstone warehouses, historic cottages and working waterfront combine with a bold arts scene and some of the freshest food in the country.
Salamanca and Battery Point
Salamanca Place is a row of 1830s sandstone warehouses on the waterfront, now home to galleries, cafés and restaurants. Every Saturday, the Salamanca Market fills the street with stalls of Tasmanian produce, crafts and food.
Behind it, Battery Point is a charming historic neighborhood of colonial cottages and narrow lanes, reached by the Kelly's Steps. Constitution Dock, where yachts arrive at the end of the Sydney to Hobart race after Christmas, is lined with floating fish and chip shops.
MONA and the mountain
MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, is a privately owned museum carved into a riverside cliff, famous for its provocative and surprising collection. It is reached by a fast ferry up the Derwent River.
kunanyi / Mount Wellington rises 1,271 meters above the city, and a road leads to the summit for views over Hobart and southern Tasmania. The Port Arthur Historic Site, a former convict settlement, and Bruny Island are popular trips.
Visiting tips
Hobart is cool even in summer, and the mountain can be snowy in winter. The Dark Mofo festival in June and the Taste of Tasmania food festival around New Year are highlights.
