Byron Bay, on the north coast of New South Wales, is a relaxed surf town famous for its beaches, its alternative spirit and its natural beauty. The Cape Byron headland is the easternmost point of mainland Australia, and the town has long attracted surfers, artists and travelers looking for a slower pace.

Beaches and the cape

Main Beach, right in front of the town, is a lively spot for swimming and watching buskers at sunset. The Pass, a long right-hand point break, is popular with surfers and dolphins alike, and Wategos Beach is a sheltered cove beneath the headland.

The Cape Byron Walking Track loops around the headland to the white Cape Byron Lighthouse, built in 1901. From the lookouts, you can often see dolphins, turtles and, between June and November, migrating humpback whales.

Town and hinterland

The town center is small and walkable, with surf shops, boutiques, cafés and a weekly farmers' market. Byron has a reputation for healthy food, yoga and wellness.

Inland, the green hinterland has rainforest, waterfalls like Minyon Falls and charming villages such as Bangalow, with its historic main street and markets.

Visiting tips

Byron Bay is under an hour's drive from Gold Coast Airport. It gets very busy in summer holidays and during the Bluesfest music festival at Easter. Book accommodation early.
