Newcastle, about two hours north of Sydney, is the second-oldest city in New South Wales. Once known for coal and steel, it has become a relaxed coastal city of surf beaches, historic ocean pools, a revitalized harbor foreshore and a lively café scene, with the Hunter Valley wine region close by.
Beaches and ocean baths
Newcastle's coastline is its great attraction. Newcastle Beach and Bar Beach are popular surf spots, and the Art Deco Newcastle Ocean Baths and the huge Merewether Ocean Baths let you swim in seawater pools beside the waves. The Bogey Hole, carved out of the rock by convicts in the early 1800s, is one of the oldest ocean pools in Australia.
The harbor and the East End
At the mouth of the harbor, Nobbys Head is topped by a lighthouse and joined to the mainland by a long breakwater, a great place to watch huge coal ships come and go. Fort Scratchley, a historic fort above the harbor, has tunnels to explore, and the foreshore park and Honeysuckle precinct are lined with restaurants and bars.
A classic coastal walk
The Bathers Way is a 6-kilometer coastal path from Nobbys Beach to Merewether Beach. Start at Nobbys, walk past Fort Scratchley to Newcastle Beach and the Ocean Baths, then climb to the Anzac Memorial Walk, a steel bridge along the clifftop with sweeping views.
Continue past the Bogey Hole and King Edward Park to Bar Beach and Dixon Park, ending at Merewether Ocean Baths. Finish with a coffee on Darby Street, the city's café strip.
Visiting tips
Summer is beach season, and spring and autumn are pleasant for walking. Newcastle is an easy day trip or weekend from Sydney by train or car. The Hunter Valley wineries are about an hour inland, and Port Stephens, with dolphins and dunes, is to the north.
