Visby, on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Scandinavia. Its 3.4-kilometer town wall, church ruins and rose-covered houses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The walled town
Visby was a rich Hanseatic trading town, and its ring wall with dozens of towers still surrounds the center. Inside are ruins of medieval churches and St Mary's Cathedral. In summer, roses climb the walls of the old houses.
Gotland
Medieval Week, in August, fills the town with costumed markets and jousting. Gotland has sandy beaches and limestone sea stacks called raukar.
