Sigtuna, founded around 980, is Sweden's oldest town. Its small wooden houses, medieval church ruins and runestones sit on the shore of Lake Mälaren, near Stockholm.

The town

Stora gatan is believed to be Sweden's oldest street still in use, lined with colorful wooden houses, cafés and shops. Tiny Sigtuna town hall is one of the smallest in Sweden.

History

Ruins of medieval stone churches and more than a dozen Viking-age runestones are scattered around the town.

A day in Sigtuna

Walk along Stora gatan, Sweden's oldest street, browsing small shops and bakeries in its colorful wooden houses. Look for the runestones along the way, carved by Viking-age people to honor their family members. Visit the ruins of the medieval churches of St. Olof and St. Per, and the red-brick Mary Church.

In the afternoon, walk along the lakeshore of Mälaren or take a boat to Skokloster Castle, a baroque palace across the water.

Good to know

Sigtuna is about 45 minutes from Stockholm and very close to Arlanda Airport, making it a nice first or last stop on a trip to Sweden.

Summer is the best time, when boats run on the lake. In winter, the town has a charming Christmas market.
